In the words of singer, songwriter, H.E.R “We got options, but I wanna let you know that I decided, I finally realised all I want is you.” Sometimes all you wanted in a relationship was just the partner and not their seed… So, the key is knowing “we’ve got options!” and choosing your best option.

Quick homemade urban dictionary definition “What is contraception?”

Well, contraception means just that: contra– against + ception – inception = the prevention of inception. That, my friends, can make all the difference in your youth! The prevention of unplanned pregnancy and unwanted disease.

Get this bizarre fact different contraceptive methods date as far back as 3000 B.C however, then, the reasons for their use of contraceptives weren’t just for the prevention of pregnancy and disease, but the prevention of death. Wild right? Some of the kings from the ancient times believed their semen was filled with demons, scorpions and serpents – yikes! So their sperm would ultimately be a death sentence for their wives.

Now get this, barrier contraceptives i.e condoms in the ancient times were typically made from animal intestines, tortoise shells, animal horns (ouch!) and linen sheaths.

Thanks to modern science, we know for sure that semen doesn’t carry scorpions or serpents lol! However, it can carry disease that is just as dangerous if you ask me. Contraceptive methods can be divided into 3 groups: short acting reversible contraceptives (SARCs), Long acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) & others namely, non-reversible contraceptives such as Sterilization.

Some commonly used SARCs are “Barrier” contraceptives AKA Condoms which come in male and female versions, all kinds of shapes and sizes, flavours and materials (thank goodness). These are good protective contraceptives not only for family planning but also for preventing transmission of disease namely STIs.

Another SARC “the pill”, which consists of a pack of 28 tablets taken daily and if taken correctly, it is very effective in preventing pregnancy. There are also contraceptive patches which you stick on your body and it produces a slow release of hormones that prevents ovulation.

Two most commonly used LARCs are the IUDs (intrauterine device) and implants. IUDs come in a copper T (non-hormonal) and progesterone IUD (hormonal), they are inserted into the uterus and prevent implantation of the ovum in the uterus, they not only last a long time (5-10 years) but are the most effective form of contraception.

The implant is a small plastic rod inserted on your arm under the skin and gives a steady release of hormones into the body thus disturbing ovulation and cervical changes. The implant may be used for 2-3 years. Last but not least, the most effective and longest lasting contraceptive method is abstinence proven 100% effective, all day, any day, no questions asked.

So whether you’re preventing death, disease or pregnancy, contraception is a tool that is there to assist you in having more control over the consequences of sex. Sex shouldn’t be filled with worry and regret or a trip to the pharmacy for the morning after pill (emergency contraception). Sex can be safe and risk free! We’ve got options! You have a choice and the right to control the narrative of every sexual encounter, exercise it!
